Punta Arenas is rich with Patagonian history through artifacts of the Braun-Mendez family, copies of which are sold in local shops. The city can easily be seen afoot and offers panoramic views over the big island of Tierra del Fuego across the cold windy Strait of Magellan. We took a ferry excursion to Magdalena Island, an unspoiled habitat of penguins, cormorants and many other birds. One of the largest colonies of Magellan penguins nests and breeds here.
