Day 13: Montevideo, Uruguay

The sail into Montevideo was wonderful.  We were invited by a pair of British bridge players to have cocktails on their veranda, then go to dinner.  While in the channel approaching the harbor, we saw a pilot whale following a small ship and performing tail flaps and jumps. The harbor itself was full of trash in the water and fuel leaking from several sunken vessels.

Uruguay, one of the smallest countries of South America, is considered the most “European”.   Most of its inhabitants are of Spanish and Italian origin.  Starting at the fat anchor of the Admiral Graf Spree, and continuing through the Port Market, we explored the city on foot for most of the day.  Prado Park is noted for its historical monuments and attractive gardens.  Plaza Independencia has a prominent statue of General Artigas, considered to be the founder of Uruguay (1726).  There were many spectacular doors and some unusual shops as depicted in our photographs below:
